July 25, 2024

Some essential safety and security tips to ensure your trip is enjoyable when visiting Paris for the 2024 Olympics.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris starts tomorrow, the 26th of July until Sunday 11th of August and promises to be a spectacular event, attracting visitors from all over the world. Whether you're a seasoned traveller or it's your first time abroad, here are some essential tips to ensure your trip is safe and enjoyable.

1. Plan Ahead

  • Travel documents: Ensure your passport is up to date and any necessary visas are secured well in advance.
  • Accommodation: Book your stay early through reputable sources to avoid last-minute issues.
  • Insurance: Purchase travel insurance that covers health, accidents, and theft.

2. Stay Informed

  • Local news: Stay updated by checking Foreign Travel Advice or your home nation's travel advice, and check-out local news.
  • Emergency numbers: Familiarise yourself with emergency numbers (112 for general emergencies in Europe).
  • Event guidelines: Follow the official Olympic event schedules and guidelines for attendees.

3. Health Precautions

  • Vaccinations: Check that your routine vaccinations are up to date.
  • Health measures: Follow any health guidelines issued by local authorities, especially in light of COVID-19 or other potential outbreaks.
  • An excellent resource is travelhealthpro.org.uk (this is a Gov site)

4. Security Measures

  • Travel & Accommodation: Book your trip with a travel agent or tour operator that is an ABTA Member to ensure peace of mind.
  • Personal belongings: Keep your belongings secure and be mindful of pickpockets in crowded areas.
  • Official venues: Stick to official Olympic venues and recommended tourist spots.
  • Travel light: Carry minimal valuables and important documents. Use hotel safes where available.

5. Public Transport

  • Navigation: Familiarise yourself with Paris’s public transport system; Metro, buses, and trams are efficient and safe.
  • Rush hours: Avoid public transport during peak times to steer clear of overcrowding.
  • Transport Apps: Use reliable transport apps for real-time updates and directions.

6. Cultural Awareness

  • Local customs: Respect local customs and traditions to ensure a pleasant interaction with locals.
  • Language: Learn a few basic phrases in French; locals appreciate the effort, even if they speak English.

7. Stay Connected

  • Contact information: Keep a list of important contacts, including your embassy.
  • Communication plan: Have a plan to stay in touch with family and friends, updating them on your whereabouts.

8. Enjoy Responsibly

  • Alcohol: Consume alcohol responsibly and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Buddy system: Travel with a companion especially females, especially at night or in less familiar areas.

By taking these precautions, you can focus on enjoying the events and the beautiful city of Paris!
