Keeping Safe this Christmas
Stay safe this Christmas when Christmas shopping & visiting Christmas Markets.

The festive season is a magical time, and Christmas markets and bustling shopping centres are hive of activity but let’s be honest they can be overwhelming, crowded and sometime feel unsafe. Stay safe and make the most of your festive outings with these practical tips from Peregrine Risk Management:
Plan ahead
- Research the market layout, parking, and public transport options.
- Go during off-peak hours if possible to avoid overcrowding.
- Tell people where you are going or share your location so they know where you are.
Stay aware of your surroundings
- Be aware of your nearest exits in case of an emergency.
- Avoid distractions like excessive phone use (in large cities like London, mobile phone robbery is at an all-time high so try and avoid use of your phone in public)
Secure your belongings
- We recommend handbags / backpacks with zippers are kept close to your body and at the front where you can see them, and keep your wallet and phone in front pockets to prevent being targeted by pickpockets.
- Stay cautious of overly friendly strangers or offers that seem too good to be true.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and use contactless payment options when possible.
- Where possible avoid using your pin in public when making purchases.
Stay connected
- If visiting with others, establish a meeting point in case you get separated - identify a prominent landmark that is easily recognisable during times of heightened activity.
- Keep your phone charged and consider carrying a portable charger.
Be mindful of personal space
- Crowds can get tight; keep a safe distance from others where possible.
- Avoid sudden movements that might cause accidents.
Food and drink
- Only buy from reputable vendors to ensure food hygiene safety.
- Keep an eye on your drinks particularly at Christmas markets and out at any Christmas parties to prevent spiking.
- Drink in moderation.
Trust your instincts
- If a situation feels unsafe or overwhelming, leave the area promptly.
- If there is an incident that is an emergency call 999 immediately, if you need to report a crime such as having a bag stolen, call 101.
