The killing of Khamenei removes a stabilising figure within Iran’s complex factional regime structure. In the short term, his death is more likely to intensify hardline elements within the IRGC and security apparatus than to trigger any move towards de-escalation. It was a pleasure for our Intelligence Services Manager Rebecca Jenkins , who heads up the Internship Programme, to attend The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Careers Celebration Evening at The Shaw Library, hosted brilliantly by the Employer Engagement Team. It brought together UK based and international employers who work closely with the university to support students through various programmes. At Peregrine RM we are on our second year of supporting LSE's fantastic students with summer internships, last year hosting Luc Parrot and Gioia Serena Wang and this year hosting William Tomblin Shaw and Luca Mazibrada . Social media is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family, interact with people online, log travel and to stay up to date on this happening around the world, however it does come with potential threats that could jeopardise you and your families safety. Here are ten Do’s and Don’ts when using social media:

1. Don’t go live; on Instagram for example, as this can give away your location, and if on vacation can reveal your home is empty.

2. Don’t tag your live location in social media posts, again this can reveal where you are and cause security concerns and unwanted attention and notify potential thieves that your house is empty or even where your house is, if tagged at home.

3. Don’t post images or videos of your house, cars, jewellery – this will alert gangs / thieves of your possessions.

4. Don’t track your activity e.g Strava – this will show your location and also where you live leading to unwanted attention and potential crime on where you reside.

5. Don’t use public WiFi. Cyber-crime is at an all-time high and using a public WiFi connection will lead to potential hacks and data leaks of your personal information.

6. Do post your vacation images once you have returned from your holiday.

7. Do share gifted / paid promotions e.g. jewellery partnerships.

8. Do turn off your geolocation, this will remove your location from being tracked.

9. Do pick strong passwords and update them frequently, this will prevent cyber criminals getting access to your accounts should there be a data leak.

Peregrine Risk Management runs a successful intelligence internship programme which has led to a new partnership with Buckinghamshire New University . Through the programme our Intelligence Services Manager, Rebecca Jenkins works hard behind the scenes running the partnership and in March 2023 was delighted to have been invited to join the Buckinghamshire New University Aviation and Security School Industry Advisory Board.

The objective of the new Industry Advisory Board is to bring industry and education closer together. The hope that this new Board, will have a broad range of expertise and geographical spread which will make a significant impact. The university plans to develop its expertise in consultancy and project management for industry, and the Board will see Aviation Partnerships, with two already in place in the UK and Finland, and others being considered.

Research projects will commence with two already underway looking at ‘ Hybrid Hardening ’ and ‘ Baggage Management Improvement ’…plus the supportive developments on the Intelligence, Security, Resilience and Police side led by Dave Giblin and, on the Aviation side, by Lloyd Carswell.

Rebecca is honoured to have been asked to join the new board as a member, where she will become an intelligence expert, run guest lectures and attend the board meetings, alongside providing expert advice.

Through our partnership with Buckinghamshire New University , 8 students and 2 staff members visited the Peregrine Risk Management offices in Plymouth on the 9th of May - it was a pleasure to host the group, giving them insight into the operational side of the business and learning more about the importance of intelligence in the security risk management sector.

Top Tips for staying safe at the World Cup in Qatar

Are you looking to travel out to Qatar for the World Cup? If so, here is some guidance for your trip.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 starts on Sunday 20th November in Qatar, at Peregrine Risk Management , we have created our own starting line-up who have some advice and travel tips for those travelling to watch the games:

Ensure you have the right level of insurance cover
Research, understand, and respect the local laws, beliefs, and culture
Check your luggage before departure for any items or technology which could cause offence
The internet is monitored in Qatar - you could be detained for posting content which is deemed offensive to Qatar or Islam
Plan your transportation between the venues and your accommodation in advance
Monitor local and international news for incidents or disruptions
Take care with your language when talking with officials - swearing can carry penalties
A Hayya Card is required for entry to Qatar, no exceptions for the World Cup, you need to arrange this in advance
Do not wear attire which could cause offence - clothing with swear words, religious/political connotations etc.
Do not discuss contentious topics in public or online - e.g., religion, politics, human rights
Avoid involvement in any fan violence, the police are likely to respond more aggressively than usual
Ensure you have emergency contacts to hand

At each stadium you should identify a rally point in case of separation - you should identify one at each end of the venue

Start to Prepare for the Protect Duty

The new legislation is expected in or before 2023, but what does it mean for organisations?

What is the Protect Duty?

The Protect Duty also known as Martyn’s Law, named after one of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing, Martyn Hett, will be a new legislation that looks at an organisations or venues preparedness for terrorist attacks.

A public consultation on the Protect Duty was completed in 2021 www.gov.uk/government/consultations/protect-duty and the legislation is now expected to be presented either later this year or early 2023.

What the Protect Duty means organisations?

There are three main areas it will apply to:

1. Public venues (eg. entertainment and sports venues, tourist attractions, shopping centres with a capacity of 100 persons or more)

2. Large organisations (eg. retail or entertainment chains employing 250 staff or more that operate at publicly accessible locations)

3. Public spaces (eg. public parks, beaches, thoroughfares, bridges, town/city squares and pedestrianised areas). This includes event organisers using these spaces.

How the proposed Protect Duty affects you or your business/organisation?

The Government considers that the owners and operators of public venues and large organisations should be required to:

1. Use available information and guidance provided by the Government and the police and to engage with freely available counter-terrorism advice and training

To conduct vulnerability assessments of operating places and spaces
To mitigate the risks created by these vulnerabilities

4. Develop a robust plan on how to deal with or act as a result of a terrorist attack; consider and implement ‘reasonably practicable’ protective security and organisational preparedness measures - developing a strategy that ensures you have assessed your site and its use, including suitable mitigation measures to protect staff, as well as staff training, and plans for how to react in the event of an attack.

For smaller organisations and venues, this would involve simple low-cost preparedness measures, such as ensuring that:

1. Staff are trained and aware of threats, likely attack methods and how to respond

2. Staff are trained to identify the signs of hostile reconnaissance and to take appropriate action

3. The organisation’s response to different attack types is regularly updated and exercised.

What should security professionals be addressing now?

In this period ahead of the introduction of the new legislation, it is an ideal opportunity for security professionals to take a step back and re-visit their organisation’s existing security measures from both a strategic and operational perspective.

Security Risk and Threat Assessments: The legislation will require businesses to maintain live and engaged risk and threat assessments to manage all locations and events. An example would be a conference centre that would invite and host a range of businesses, speakers and organisations that could attract a terrorist threat.
Responsible Qualified Persons: There is no clear definition or insight at this time as to who the ‘responsible qualified person’ might be. However, within the framework, we could assume that this person will have the required training for the role and, therefore, likely to be an external supplier. If this is the case, it puts in focus the need for businesses and organisations to begin their preparations now.
Accredited Training and Qualifications: Since 2001, the UK security sector (primarily in terms of guarding; door supervision; and CCTV operation) has been regulated by law through the Private Security Industry Act, although licensing (which is overseen by the Security Industry Authority) has not yet encompassed professional security advisers, such as consultants. The advent of the Protect Duty legislation will however alter the landscape as it is likely to include reference to suitably qualified persons which will be determined once the legislation is in law.

Peregrine Risk Management has demonstrated their support for the Armed Forces Community including serving personnel, both regular and reservist, veterans and military families by signing the Armed Forces Covenant , pledging to make sure that our armed forces community will not be disadvantaged in accessing services or jobs after they've served in the military.

Peregrine Risk Management work with ABTA on their Student Representative Programme

As an ABTA Partner + member, Peregrine Risk Management were approached by ABTA to join their Student Representative Programme. Emma Barwell, a final year student at the University of Plymouth was successfully selected to join as ABTA's Student Representative in partnership with Peregrine Risk Management.

Emma who is a final year student studying Tourism Management BSc (Hons) was asked to write a White Paper on Utilising marketing to change behaviour and reduce risk exposure during travel (which can be found above).

Emma was mentored by James Lawrence MSc CSyP MSyl, Co-Founder and Director of Peregrine Risk Management, who commented. "Emma has worked on a short marketing and communications project to help influence traveller safety and security and reduce risk and has been a fantastic representative". James and Emma have been able to meet up face-to-face to discuss the project as they are both based in Plymouth.

When asked her why she applied and what she's been up to in her role, Emma commented:

“When I first heard that my university was looking for a student to become an ABTA Regional Student Representative, I was really keen to get involved. I knew it would be a great opportunity to gain a deeper insight into the tourism industry and network with businesses within the industry too and it's been great to work with Peregrine Risk Management and work on this interesting topic”.

Peregrine's top tips for business travellers

For almost 2 years the world and society has been affected significantly by a global pandemic. However, as the light at the end of the tunnel slowly starts to appear and the need to resume travel becomes reality, it is important to remember that those travel risks faced pre-pandemic are still abundant, and in most cases more dangerous than ever.

For the return of safe travel assessing the risk is key - encompassing all risks not just Covid-19 based which can include increased criminality, cybercrime, unrest and natural disasters. Once a risk assessment has been completed to identify the risks, measures can be taken to reduce the impact and likelihood. This can include contingency planning, training, journey management and secure transportation plus 24/7 response. In addition to this, it is also extremely important to understand the culture and local laws which can be incorporated in a pre-deployment brief so the traveller gets a full understanding of the visiting nations protocols and culture. Inherent risks following the Covid-19 pandemic have changed and also increased due to the global economical downturn, unemployment, social unrest and increased cybercrime. Lack of internal investment in infrastructure will see an increase in accidents, outages and other related incidents. Those countries that experience natural disasters (due to climate change, the frequency and severity is increasing) on a catastrophic scale and will continue to see a lack of investment in regeneration strategies, this will also trigger increased criminality, kidnap and unrest.
